Best wishes to Bernie’s Super Valu Triathlon team who will be taking part in the Musgrave SuperValu-Centra Ltd National Triathlon on Saturday next the 5th of September. The event will take place in Farran, Co. Cork and hundreds of competitors from all over the country are expected to participate.
L/R Meghan Corrigan, Edel Farrelly and Tadhg Corley
The three enthusiastic athletes are currently serving members of Bernie’s Super Valu, Roscrea. They are Meghan Corrigan, Edel Farrelly and Tadhg Corley.
Each athlete has their own specialty. Meghan will do the 800m swim, Edel will embark on the 33km cycle and Tadhg will take on the 10km run. All monies raised will go to Our Lady’s Hospital For Sick Children Crumlin, Co Dublin, as well as the “Irish Cancer Society”. Since 2002 this event has raised a massive €2,500,000 for the Hospital and the Cancer Society. Funds in recent years were used to help with the construction of the New National Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant Centre in the New Medical Tower of Our Lady’s Hospital as well as the development of the emergency unit of Our Lady’s Hospital, which incidentally is one of the largest hospitals in Europe devoted exclusively to children. This year money raised from the triathlon will help increase the number of clinical spaces in the emergency department at Our Lady’s Hospital from nine to fourteen.
As regards the Irish Cancer Society, this year the society has committed to further expand its services to cancer patients through the development of Daffodil Centres in hospitals across Ireland. These centres will provide information to patients on cancer and its treatment as well as providing information for the families of patient’s etc. The first Daffodil Centre is currently being established by Galway University Hospital and other planned centres will be rolled out to selected hospitals nationwide on a phased basis. Monies raised through the Musgrave Triathlon will help fund the establishment and development of these centres, to help and support thousands across Ireland through the cancer journey.
Speaking this week former triathlon competitor and mentor to the team, Mr Seamus Mahon (Super Valu, Roscrea) said that he was very proud of the progress made by the three athletes during their training and he wished them every success possible on Saturday the 5th of September. Brian Colclough, Manager of Super Valu, Roscrea, said it was fantastic to work with people with such initiative and he encouraged the public to support them, and in doing so support two such worthwhile charities. Brian pointed out that the three athletes carried out all the intensive training needed to be able to compete in this grueling competition, in their own time. Such dedication needs to be applauded and we are sure that like last year, the athletes representing Roscrea will have a very successful day and fundraising campaign.
Fundraising will continue throughout the store in the build up to the competition. There is no pressure whatsoever on anyone, as donations are by voluntary contribution only. Best wishes to all involved.
