|Hazel Stanley, working in Laois VEC, is going to teach in Calcutta (now known as Kolkata) in India this summer for 6 weeks in July and August. |
She is going with the HOPE Foundation, which is a registered charity in Ireland based in Cork. The HOPE Foundation was founded in 1999 with the aim of bringing help and hope to the abandoned and abused street children of Kolkata.
Thousands of children in Kolkata are born into poverty, grow up abandoned in filth and ignorance and die alone, unless they are offered a chance. Together with Indian partner groups, HOPE currently funds over 50 projects for street children and their families in the areas of: shelter, nutrition, healthcare, education, vocational training, rehabilitation and counselling. Hazel will be working in education centres in residential homes for children who have been taken off the streets and also with underprivileged women who are receiving vocational training to give them employment skills.
All of these women and children have suffered many challenges living below the poverty line and appreciate the opportunity of education and a chance to rise above their difficult situation. Volunteers who have gone to Kolkata say ‘It is a city where you will see some of the best and the worst of humanity anywhere in the world but also get to meet the people who benefit directly from help and the funding raised’.
Hazel is funding her own flights and is aiming to raise a minimum of €2,500 to bring with her to go directly to the education centres. Any help would be much appreciated and if you wish to support this worthy cause, you can donate directly to the account that Hazel has set up specifically for donations in AIB 93-52-71 07680019 or fill out a HOPE sponsorship card, or support Hazel in her fundraising activities.
