Friday, August 26th is likely to be the most entertaining evening of the year when Roscrea Hurling Club present “Fight Night”, which will take place in the Damer Court Hotel, commencing at 8.30pm.
Over twenty members of the community are training hard in preparation for the night. The fighters consist of well known local people from within and outside the “Hurling Club”.
Some of the marquee fights will consist of Kevin Brady the Senior Chairman, going toe to toe with Juvenile Chairman Roddy Ryan. The “Battle of the Handballers” will see local barber John McQuaid square up to local landscaper John Lee in what should be an intriguing contest. Benji Riordan the pride of “Super Valu” is in hard training as he prepares to slug it out with a determined Baby Wright. More fights have yet to be confirmed but topping the bill will no doubt be the clash of the super heavyweights as Tipperary Hurling Legend, John Carroll takes on the “Bone Crusher” himself, Hurling Club Secretary, Proinsias Loughnane. While the bookies are leaning towards the former All-Star, there is plenty of support for the Secretary, who expects to win and won’t consider his victory an upset when he prevails!. We look forward to featuring both boxers in next week’s issue.
The first bout on the night will be the “Chairman’s Battle” as Kevin Brady, Senior Chairman goes head to head with Juvenile Chairman, Roddy Ryan.
Kevin nicknamed “Dancer Flatfoot Brady” was a colossus on the field of play and will no doubt bring that fierce physical presence into the ring when he goes head to head with Roddy in this eagerly anticipated contest. Kevin’s favourite music is anything by the Wolfe Tones and his favourite food is anything that is edible. Having played on Roscrea’s first every County Championship team it’s no surprise that 1968 will always be his greatest sporting memory. Kevin faces a slightly more mobile opponent in Roddy but he knows that if he traps his opponent on the ropes he has the power to seal the victory.
Roddy Ryan is known as “Roddy The Dodger Ryan” and he has put in some serious training as he prepares for the big fight. His biggest sporting achievement is his County Junior Medal that he won in 1982 and his favourite sporting memory is last Year’s All-Ireland final. Roddy’s favourite music is Motown and he will enter the ring on Friday the 26th to the Queen classic “Another one bites the dust”. He’s most treasured possession is his “head” which in his own word he “would like to keep”. No doubt Kevin Brady will do everything in his power to knock Roddy’s block of, but should Roddy make Kevin kiss the canvas, the achievement could even surpass the 1982 county medal!
Tickets for the event are on sale now and cost just €20.00. All proceeds will be used to help towards the development of the club.
