The 50th Consecutive Roscrea Conference Was A Great Success. Local Historian & Organiser Of The Conference For The Past 25 Years, George Cunningham Was Honoured At The Event
A SPECIAL presentation was made to George Cunningham at the 50th consecutive biannual Roscrea conference at Mount St Joseph (MSJ) abbey in the town at the weekend.
As a tribute to local historian George Cunningham whohas helped organsie every Roscrea Conference over the past twenty five years, aspecial book was launched in his honour at the 50th RoscreaConference which took place at Mt.St. Joseph’s Abbey,Roscrea, last weekend. The book is entitled “A Carnival OfLearning” and features George on the front cover. Co- Editor, ProfessorPeter Harbison is pictured here at the launch with Dom Lawrence Walsh and DomRichard Purcell.

George has been conference organiser and director since it began in 1987.
On Saturday he was presented with a specially bound collection of essays, A Carnival of Learning: Celebrating 50 Conferences at MSJ, edited by Peter Harbison and Valerie Hall.
Its cover is of local oak with calligraphy by Tim O’Neill. The presentation was made by the abbot general of the Cistercian Order, Dom Eamon Fitzgerald.

Two historical/archaeological conferences are organised each year at the abbey, one on early Christian Ireland, which takes place the weekend after Easter, and the second, held around Hallowe’en, which concentrates on medieval Ireland.

The theme of last weekend's conference was “From Citeaux to Roscrea and Celebrating fifty conferences at Roscrea” The event attracted a world wide audience and tremendous praise must be given to local historian and lecturer George Cunningham whose tireless efforts have helped ensure that the conference continues to go from strength to strength as each year passes by.
