Roscrea Credit Union hosted it’s much anticipated annual school’s quiz on Friday evening last. Once again the quiz attracted a massive turnout with teams from Roscrea and it’s neighbouring parishes and villages all taking part.
The competition was broken into two categories A & B representing two different age groups. The woman in the hot seat posing the questions was Mai Phelan and the eventual winners of the two categories came from Dromakeenan National School. Both teams can be very proud of their achievements. This is the second year in a row that Dromakeenan have pulled off a remarkable double so great credit must go to the students and in particular to Paul Maher who for years has committed so much to preparing the Droamakeenan students for the annual quiz. Great credit must also go to Clonlisk who finished runners up in both categories and credit to all the participating schools especially the Sacred Heart who just lost out on a runner-up spot after two rounds of tie-break questions.

Roscrea Credit Union would like to express its sincere thanks to all the Credit Union staff and directors who sacrificed their Friday evening to lend their assistance to such an important occasion on the Credit Union calendar. Thanks to Louis Cooley and Dick Conroy in particular who had the most difficult job of keeping the scores. Thanks to the collectors Jim Bolger and Liam Phelan and a big thank you to Gemma Loughnane who corrected on the night and of course Mai Phelan who did an excellent job as quiz master. Tracy Hynes, the Youth Officer of the Credit Union and organiser of the event was thanked most sincerely this week by the Manager of the Credit Union, Brian King who said that Tracy’s commitment to developing the relationship between the credit union and it’s young members over so many years is really appreciated by not just the credit union but by the teachers, the parents and most importantly all the young students that Tracy has engaged with over the years. The Manager said that this commitment has helped establish Tracy as an extremely popular local person in our local schools. Brian King also took the opportunity to thank Deirdre Hogan another popular staff member who gave up so much of her free time recently to get involved in the very successful “Week Of light/Hope Festival” which again had a major emphasis on the young members of the community. The Credit Union would also like to thank the Staff of the Racket Hall Hotel and would also like to take this opportunity to thank the pupils, parents, teachers and principals of the participating schools for helping the Credit Union make the quiz such a fantastic and worthwhile event.
The Credit Unions quiz is unique in that over 20,000 children under the age of thirteen, representing 32 counties and over 300 Credit Union’s nationwide take part. This is the 24th successive year that the Irish League of Credit Unions has run the quiz, which continues to grow in strength and popularity each year. The quiz is also unique in that Credit Unions from all 32 counties on the Island, participate, making the Credit Union Annual Schools Quiz a truly nationwide event. The winners of the local quiz go on to represent Roscrea at Chapter Level in the regional finals, and the winners and runners up of both categories at that stage progress even further to the national final to be held in April. The National Finals as one would expect are very competitive and each year over one hundred teams compete for All-Ireland glory. Prizes at National Level are quiet substantial with the winning school receiving a cash grant in addition to participants receiving certificates and prizes.
