After much negotiation with OPW, Damer House Gallery was allowed to open to the general public to coincide with the Christmas market 'A Taste of Roscrea '.

It was a big concession for the OPW as there is no budget winter programming. Now that this has happened we would hope that this will be a yearly event. Anyone who visited this exciting market, filled with festive stalls and all of the traditional Christmas rituals, Santa and Carols. There was a number of fashion shows in aid of local Charities, organized by enthusiast locals. The dreadful weather for the first two days kept the crowds at bay, but didn't dampen the enthusiasm of all of the stall holders who maintained the goodwill throughout. Talking to Paul, from The White House, the Hostelry which leans against the Castle walls , he was over the moon' to see the windows of the beautiful Damer House lit
up, giving a lending a theatrically dramatic backdrop to the festivities within the Castle grounds.
The Christmas Group Show was held in the Gallery which is open for the summer months, showing contemporary work from Irish and Internationally recognised artists. It is normally run on a 'not for profit' basis and is supported by Co. Tipperary Arts Office. This was the first time the gallery held an 'open submission' with all work for sale.

Twenty seven artists exhibited, many of whom were local artists from Roscrea and Birr. There were also artists who live and work in Ireland, but hail from Germany, England, Switzerland and Mexico. The exhibition was launched by Dom Richard Purcell, the Abbot of Mount St. Joseph Abbey, Roscrea who spoke movingly of the important role art had in our lives. The opening attracted over 100 people. The exhibition was very impressive. The work was a mixture of painting, print, drawings, sculpture and ceramics in a mixture of traditional and contemporary practices. It was extremely well attended
over the four days with quite a number of sales.
The gallery directors Therry Rudin and Patricia Hurl spoke with great enthusiasm about the support they are getting from the local community and also about the great work done by their recently formed committee consisting of Tim Davis, Mary Dillon, Noreen Moore-Heenan, Caroline Loughnane and Des Walshe.
