MINISTER OF STATE TOM PARLON ANNOUNCES THAT THE BLACK MILLS, ROSCREA, CO. TIPPERARY IS NOW OPEN TO VISITORS

The Black Mills, Church Street, Roscrea is now open to visitors. St. Cronan’s High Cross is now housed in the mill having originally stood in the graveyard of St. Cronan’s Church. Owing to concerns for its protection from environmental effects it was decided in discussions with the local Church of Ireland community that the cross should be moved to a suitable indoor space to ensure its conservation. The Black Mills building which has lost part of its original structure has been substantially restored, this involved roofing the building and inserting floors, one of which is in the form of a balcony and which allows viewing of St. Cronan’s High Cross from different levels. A glass screen wall has been installed on one gable to allow a view of St. Cronan’s Church from inside the mill. The Roscrea pillar stone is also on display and an exhibition on the monastic history of Roscrea will be installed at the mill during the summer.

Minister Tom Parlon has welcomed the opening of the Black Mills. The Minister said ’I am delighted that the Black Mills is now open to visitors, it is a welcome addition to the existing heritage sites that the Office of Public Works has responsibility for in Roscrea. I would like to acknowledge the assistance and co-operation of the people of Roscrea over many years in bringing this project to fruition’.

The Black Mills is open to the public from 10.00 - 17.00 daily until the end of October. Admission tickets to Roscrea Castle and Damer House also cover admission to the Black Mills. For further information please telephone (0505) 21850.

The project was funded under the National Development Plan 2000 - 2006.
