The Countdown to the 2003 Special Olympics Begins

What it Means to be a Host Town
The countdown is on to the 2003 Special Olympics! June 21st will see the Official Opening of the Games with this gala occasion marking the start of the biggest sporting occasion in the world this year. Athletes and their mentors and families from the four corners of the globe will converge on Dublin to participate in the variety of sporting events which will bring the focus of the world’s media on Ireland. But, for Roscrea, the excitement of this major international event will begin on June 16th when a group of Saudi Arabian athletes and their mentors and supporters will arrive in the town to spend four days preparing for the Games.

By now, most people will know that Roscrea is playing host to this delegation from Saudi Arabia, but what does it mean to be a Host Town? When it was formally agreed that Ireland would be hosting the World Games for 2003, the task of accommodating the huge number of visitors to the country in a way that would give them a flavour of Ireland began. Each participating delegation was matched with a Host Town based on its size and needs. Consideration was given to existing Twinned Town/City relationships or unique programmes and facilities in the Host Town that applied to participate. There was great excitement when it was learned that Roscrea would host the delegation from Saudi Arabia! The Host Town programme is one of the most important elements of the 2003 Special Olympics World Summer Games, giving communities from all around the country the opportunity to show their International guests a taste of good old-fashioned Irish hospitality. As the delegations will have traveled long distances, they will need time to acclimatise and rest before the Games begin. They will also need a chance to avail of sports training in advance of their competitions but most importantly, the Host Town Programme gives the athletes and their party an opportunity to meet the Irish people. The Host Town Programme involves the whole community, from civic leaders, politicians, the business community, schools, sports and youth groups and all local organizations.

A local committee in Roscrea, under the Chairmanship of Mr. Martin Carney, Assistant Manager at St. Cronan’s Centre, has been meeting regularly since the middle of 2002 with the task of organising and finding the Roscrea Host Town Programme. The local response to the requests for finding and the organising of fund-raising events has been enormous and the committee was delighted with the response they received. Over the coming weeks in our Countdown to the 2003 Special Olympics we will be featuring the work of this committee, the events that have and will take place to raise funds, the programme of events in Roscrea from 16th to 20th of June, the various groups who will help, details of the events our Saudi Arabian athletes will compete in so you can follow their progress, a taste of the culture and customs of our visitors and, most importantly the importance of the Special Olympics and what it means to the athletes. So watch out over the coining weeks and months for all you need to know to prepare you for the arrivals of our visitors and the games themselves - the countdown is on!
