Projects are focused around the intention to empower young people to take action, and play a key role as enthusiastic citizens intent on making a difference within their community, becoming an inspiration to others
The Youth Of The Chapel Lane Estate in Roscrea joined forces with community activists from Roscrea 2000, Roscrea Credit Union and the local authority recently as part of a tree planting project aimed at developing young people to be responsible citizens for the future.
One of these projects involves Young people from the Chapel Lane community who have undertaken to develop their local environment. With the help of internationally acclaimed horticulturalist Matt Fogarty from Ballinderry they were introduced to the world of trees.
During visits to his amazing Tree Farm Matt explained to the young people the history of individual species and care requirements for selected trees. He planted in their hearts a love of trees. Following a number of visits they selected a variety trees to be planted within their community, and in turn helped to plant them. It will be the responsibility of the young people to protect and care for these trees.
The next phase of the project will involve both adults and young people. They will be shown how to design, plant, and nurture a front garden with ongoing support. In early summer there will be a competition to see which garden fulfils all criteria. Winners will be rewarded.
This venture shows how local committed adults and children can design and produce a beautiful local environment.
The team from Roscrea 2000 Ltd, who designed and lead the project, congratulate the young people involved. Their behaviour and participation throughout the process is to be commended.
