A 72 page book was launched at the celebrations in Coolderry Central School, Brosna, Birr last week. Coolderry is about half way between Birr and Roscrea almost in the foothills of the Sliabh Bloom mountains
The publication was devised and edited by past principal George Cunningham and printed in Walsh printers, Roscrea. The book includes reflections on teaching, and photographic memories of the schools in Kilcolman parish, past and present.
It also includes a tribute to past pupil Pat Carroll, the all star and All-Ireland Offaly hurler. Red-headed Pat died in March 2006. The tribute includes photos of the visit to Coolderry School with the McCarthy cup in 1981 and other memories.
Included also are three articles on the three sections of the parish, written by George Cunningham: Kilcolman, Coolderry and Ballybritt.
Among the teachers who contribute memories are the staff of the present school: Una Teehan, Anne Kennedy, Tom Lupton, Patrick McCarthy, Jonathan Ryan and Una Egan.
Past principals of Coolderry, Noel McMahon, George Cunningham, Paddy Bates and Brendan Hanamy all have various contributions; as do Tom McCarthy and Mary McGee who taught in Ballyeighan. Mary Egan-Donnelly who was the remedial teacher in the area for ten years and Lucia McCarthy who taught in Coolderry for 31 years both share their reminiscences.
It is packed full of photographs from down the years.
It is on sale locally or from Coolderry Central School for the modest price of €5 – surely the best value around!
