Roscrea People Of the Year Awards:
The 22nd annual Roscrea People Of the Year Awards took place at the Damer Court Hotel on Wednesday last, with over three hundred and fifty people in attendance. M.C for part one of the evening’s proceedings, Brian King, praised the efforts of George Cunningham for once again co-ordinating the awards night. He then thanked Roscrea Credit Union for their generous sponsorship of the event. The evening proper commenced with a wonderful traditional concert by Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Ros Cré.
One of the most anticipated events at the Roscrea People Of the Year Awards is the annual presentation by George Cunningham. Every year George picks a local topic of historical interest and presents his talk in his own unique and engaging way. This year the talk focused on “The Roscrea Tower and aspects of Roscrea”. Once again the presentation was a great success and thoroughly enjoyable.The second part of the evening was hosted by co-ordinator of the “People Of The Year Awards” Mr George Cunningham. First on the agenda was the annual presentation of books. Since 1987 over 30,000 books have been donated by Roscrea People. Each year Roscrea Library receives significant sponsorship of a number of books. The “George Cunningham” collection at Roscrea Library now stands at over 2500 items.
Fr Tom Corbett had the honour this year of presenting the 2009 collection of books to Aine Beausang McGee, chief librarian at Roscrea Library.
St Cronan’s Association also benefit each year from “Roscrea People Contributions”. Thanks to these contributions St Cronan’s Centres in Roscrea, Nenagh and Birr now have libraries that any organisation or training centre would be proud of. Accepting the books on behalf of St Cronans Association was General Manger, Patsy King. The presentation was made by Rev Lesley Robinson.
Local schools also benefit handsomely from “Roscrea People” contributions each year. This year’s recipient for the children’s book collection was Scoil Iósaf Naofa Corville. Dolores Fitzpatrick accepted the books from Rev Brian Griffin on behalf of the school.
In his annual address, Chairman of Roscrea Credit Union, Mr Seamus Mullaney congratulated George and “Roscrea People” for once again organsing the awards night. Seamus said that Roscrea Credit Union supported Roscrea People each year just as they support numerous clubs, societies, organisations and initiatives in the community.
The awards ceremony then took place. This year the awards were presented by Ray McCarthy and Seamus Mullaney representing the sponsors, Roscrea Credit Union. The recipients of the awards this year were Roscrea Literacy Group and in particular, its founder, Kieran McDonnell, for his continued tenacity and commitment to our community of non-nationals.
Lucy McCarthy, Director of Roscrea Community Choir, accepted an award celebrating ten years of excellence.
Paul Ryan was a recipient in recognition of his book of Ballads and Rhymes from the Rare Old Times.
Seamus Dennison, received an award to commemorate his historic involvement in Munster and Irish Rugby and for his continued commitment to our community.
This year’s “Good Neighbour Award” went to Ballaghmore. Accepting the award representing the parish, Muintir Na Tire and the GAA were Bridie Teehan, Mark Delaney and Tadhg Quinlan.
The biggest cheer of the night was reserved for the “Young Person Of the Year”. This year the winner was Darragh Carey-Kennedy for winning first place in both the under 12 Mandolin and under 12 Rogha Gleas (Miscellaneous) competitions at the all-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil in Tullamore last August.
The Roscrea People Citations on the night were presented to the Lions Club of Roscrea for forty years of service, 1968-2008. President of the Lions Club, Noreen Heenan accepted the award and thanked everyone for their support over the years.
Scoil Iosaf Naofa, Corville also received a Roscrea People Citation in recognition of winning its Green Flag.
Ray McCarthy CEO of Roscrea Credit Union thanked all those in attendance and congratulated all the award recipients. Ray encouraged people to use the Credit Union whenever possible and he thanked George Cunningham for all the effort he puts into making the awards ceremony such a successful occasion.In conclusion, George Cunningham, Co-Ordinator of the Roscrea People Of the Year Awards, thanked everyone for making the effort to come to the awards night. He thanked Brian King for all his help and Ray McCarthy and all at Roscrea Credit Union for their support. George concluded by giving a special mention to his wife Carmel for all her help and he offered his good wishes to anyone who helped in any way to make the awards night such a success.
